MANY THANKS Each year the Parent Teacher Club sets out to bring fun, exciting activities and educational tools to St. Valentine.  We hope that the students, parents and administration know that our ultimate goal is to create a warm, friendly, welcoming environment in our school. So many families dedicate countless hours to make St. Valentine the wonderful school that so many call home.  We appreciate the time and effort that goes into every program that St. Valentine offers.  We hope you will join us at the many events that are planned so that each St. Valentine program will continue to thrive.  We look forward to sharing time at athletic events, school parties, classroom activities and weekly functions.  Thank you for making St. Valentine such a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow!

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS ARE AVAILABLE! If you are a student interested is accumulating community service hours St. Valentine School PTC is always looking for helping hands!  We usually have between two to four activities scheduled for each month and we could always use volunteers to help setup, clean up and work concessions.  To volunteer, simply call the school (313) 533-7149 and the school will forward your information. Or, you can contact one of the PTC officers directly.

Benefits of Parental Involvement

“Parents are a child’s first teacher” is an often-stated phrase that rings true. As children grow and enter school, they still need their parents — their first teachers — to help them succeed in their academic careers. Everyone benefits when parents become involved in school, and work together with teachers to encourage learning.

There are many ways parents can become involved in school. Attending parent-teacher conferences, volunteering for class activities, and helping with homework are wonderful starting points. Becoming involved in school government, helping out in the classroom, and exposing children to educational activities and experiences can further benefit student education.

When parents are present at school and in the classroom, they tend to develop a better understanding of the curriculum, and are able to build relationships with teachers and school staff. These relationships help deepen mutual respect, and influence perceptions on the importance of education. Studies show that when parents are involved in school, attendance is higher, students show more attention in the classroom, their test scores are higher, behavior improves, and learning difficulties are identified sooner.

Involvement at school is continued at home. Helping with homework, providing structured routines, giving positive affirmation, and encouraging independent learning give a natural boost to academic success. Home-based involvement provides parents with the opportunity to supplement instruction, reinforce and expound on classroom learning, and reward achievement.

Parental involvement in school benefits everyone. Teachers have a higher job-satisfaction rate. Parents are better empowered to help their children become successful in learning. Students especially win, as they make greater strides in education. As your child’s first teacher, they will continue to look up to you. Remember that even having lunch at school with your child will seem special to them, and shows how much you care. No matter how your schedule is, get involved in your child’s education and make a big difference in their life.

Parent involvement is a powerful tool. Spread the word.
